Macao Victory’s Journey INTA SINGAPORE 2023

In late May 2023, Macao Victory had the privilege of participating in the prestigious 145th International Trademark Association Annual Meeting (INTA Annual Meeting) held in Singapore. As the second INTA Annual Meeting in Asia, this event drew the enthusiastic participation of nearly 8,000 professionals from 140 countries. With a rich history spanning 145 years, the International Trademark Association (INTA) is a non-profit international organization headquartered in New York City, USA.

During the INTA Annual Meeting, our President, Ms. Amy Wong, led our teams from Macao, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Zhuhai & Dongguan.

During the INTA Annual Meeting, Macao Victory’s delegation not only participated in the exhibition at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore but also engaged in exchanges and collaborations with institutions such as the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore and NUS Enterprise. These discussions encompassed diverse topics, including talent development, intellectual property promotion, technology transfer, and business incubation experiences.

Additionally, Macao Victory actively participated in a reception hosted by Malaysian based PINTAS IP Group, where we welcomed representatives from intellectual property service agencies in the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, France, Spain, Germany, Russia, and South Korea. This provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties with global service agencies, fostering closer connections and enabling us to jointly explore industry trends and the latest developments. Notably, PINTAS IP Group is one of the pioneering international intellectual property service agencies in the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City International Intellectual Property Service Hall. The Macao IP Office & Power Of Attorney…

In discussing issues with colleagues, Mr Chandra, International IP Director & IP Counsel found a common talking point with associates from other jurisdictions that entrusted their Macao IP work with Victory Group. This was in relation to Macao’s somewhat onerous POA procedures, which can add more time and admin to typical processes, as well as time sensitive ones in relation to the filing of opposition proceedings. Mr Chandra emphasized the importance of having a clear strategy when handling any procedures for Macao. A clients overall strategy may include Macao as one of the many jurisdictions being filed in. When looking at the bigger picture, he advised that we ought to allow Macau filings a bit more of a "time" priority when dealing with the ‘paperwork’ side of things, especially the fact that we more or less need the originals of POA’s in our hands in order to process anything on behalf of our clients. which can add an extra 7-10 days to standard procedures. For standard transactional procedures, there are extensions of time. But for opposition proceedings, there are no extensions of time, and quite often, there is a lot at stake for the side making the opposition & the clock has already began ticking by the time a potential infringement has been identified, together with very limited grounds to oppose an application. Add to the fact that trademark applications need to be filed at the same time as filing an opposition. Over all, he advised that if Macao is an important market for your client, it would be trite advice to suggest that time is of the essence, and its a matter of striking the right balance while not missing out on any key deadlines.
